Barretstown – wondeful magic land

“When I saw Barretstown Castle I knew this was where I wanted the first European Hole in the Wallcamp to be. I imagined a kind of medieval bazaar where children from different countries could raise a little hell together.”
Paul Newman, Founder
Barretstown is a specially designed camp, providing a programme of adventure, activities and fun – backed by the medical world – which helps children with serious illness regain their confidence and self-esteem.
Our Mission:
Barretstown improves the lives of children and their families affected by childhood cancer and other serious illness, rebuilding their confidence, trust, self-esteem through therapeutic recreation.
We provide a unique programme of adventure, activities and fun – backed by the medical world – which helps children with serious illness regain their confidence and self-esteem and has become internationally recognised as having a profound and positive impact on their lives. The medical world calls our programme ‘therapeutic recreation’, but like the campers, we know it as ‘Serious Fun’.
After taking part in one of our programmes, children go home with more confidence, self-esteem and more importantly, the reassurance that happiness is not just for healthy children.
Whether arriving from Barcelona, Belarus or Belfast, everyone who comes here are all greeted with a special sight – the Red Door of Barretstown Castle and an entuisastic welcome from all the Caras.
Our programmes include every activity you might imagine – and some you may not – including arts and crafts, horse rising, camping, creative writing, canoeing, fishing, pottery, drama, music and loads more.
Campers live in cottages in our residential village, sharing meals in the spacious dining hall, dancing after dinner and taking part in activies with their activity group from morning until night. In the evenings everyone gets together for special programmes such as disco, cabaret and theme nights. People from different countries communicate through our skilled and trained interpreters and chaperones who speak fluent English and translate between staff and campers throughout their stay. Sometimes though, it’s all non-verbal!
Barretstown – wonderful place for kids, suffered from cancer, from all over the world. Last year I had a magic experiance of volunteering in Barretstown Gang Camp. Thi is ithe summer camp for kids suffered from cancer. Barretstown help children to remember their lost childhood. If you are a kid you can run and laugh and do what you want! This is the politics of Baaretstown. Adults try to make all the best for the children in the camp. That was great experiance for me.
Never forget, Barretstown…
