CME on ” Paradigms in Oncology”
It was a rare privilege when I got invited to act as Master of Ceremonies for the CME on “Paradigms in Oncology” organized by Dept of Oncology, Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), Calicut, at Le Meridien , Kochi, on 13th March, 2011. Dr NK Warrier, HOD in Oncology at MIMS, was the main organizer, while Dr VP Gangadharan played the local host. The honour felt even greater when I realized that this meet was exclusively for doctors.
The Meet commenced at 10.30 am with a slightly apprehensive, but mightily excited “yours truly” on the dais. I introduced myself and welcomed the gathering of 20 plus physicians, then called upon the dignitaries to light the lamp and inaugurate the meet. Next, Dr NK Warrier came up to speak on the day’s programme: – The morning session addressed New Challenges in Breast Cancer. – And the noon session was for Renal Cell Carcinoma. As mentioned earlier, the meet was totally for Doctors, but I was happy to be a part of the group of renowned Doctors as I got to introduce the Speakers and the Chairpersons. The Speakers were mostly our NOA physicians, many of them new additions. (Only Dr Rejiv Rejendranath, Dr NK Warrier and Dr VP Gangadharan were the known faces.)
The role of emcee gave me a chance to personally introduce myself, and later on (during breaks in the meet) to welcome the new physicians to NOA. Dr Pavithran, Dr Anil J T, Dr Jayakumar, Dr Vineet Talwar – I was introduced to all of them by Dr NK Warrier and this led to personal interactions with all these doctors. I also got a rare opportunity for a personal interaction with Dr Rejiv Rejendranath and discussed with him about Kalaignar Insurance scheme provided by the Tamil Nadu Govt. He said that, to his knowledge, it does not cover oral tablets, but he will check and revert. Also there were other physicians to whom I self introduced myself, spoke about Novartis Oncology Access and the work TMF does with Novartis. By the end of the day, on the sidelines of the main meet, the physicians had come to know what TMF stands for and what NOA is. I consider this a lucky opportunity that I got, and the outcome a major accomplishment. The meeting came to an end by 5.15 pm. All things considered, it was a Sunday well spent, an investment for a better tomorrow. Before I forget, let me add this. The organizers gave me a lovely memento- something even my teenage son liked! That was truly the icing on the cake.
