First GIST Meeting at Hyderabad

Keeping with our approach of holding GIST meetings in cities
where such meets have never been held before, we marched ahead to Hyderabad where
the first of this kind was held on 27th February, 2016.

After Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore and Kochi this is the fifth
city where we had organized the meeting for our GIST patients and their
caregivers.

The first GIST meeting was held
in Mumbai on 11th August, 2012 and since then we are making a constant effort
of reaching to more and more GIST patients from different cities.

Being the first time we had a
successful meeting with 32 patients and caregivers attending the meet.
The meeting was held at Basavatarakam
Indo American Cancer Hospital and we are very grateful to our senior GIPAP/NOA
physicians Dr. Senthil Rajappa and Dr. Krishna Mohan who helped us with all the
logistics and supported us in organizing the meeting.

The meeting started with the
welcome speech by me followed by Amma’s presentation on Max and thereafter
presentation by Hyderabad core group member on Friends of Max.

We had Dr. Senthil Rajappa who
spoke to the group and provided a brief background of the diagnosis and the
treatment procedures.

The session on Q&A continued
for more than an hour. It was wonderful to see Dr. Senthil addressing the
questions in simple language with day-to-day examples.

Since it was the first meeting the
question were more around the side effects, tests to undergo and treatment
duration.

After the Q&A session we had the
Drama Therapy. Since the group was small we selected few members and assigned
them their roles.

The plot of the play was Tobacco Awareness.

It was really enthralling to see
the group bonding, breaking all the barriers and reaching out to others to
offer support.
After the drama therapy we had testimonials
where people shared their journey so far.

The group was very happy & motivated
and promised to be compliant and take the medicine regularly.

They also shared that the meeting
provided them space to discuss their concerns with the physicians in a larger
group and learn more about the diagnosis.

At the end of the meeting we
requested everyone to fill out the feedback forms on the Support Group meet. In
the meantime participants were interacting with each other and were exchanging
contact numbers. A support group was formed.
